Zelenko’s Five-Goal Week, Swartz’s Game-Winner Highlight Week 5

One of the main goals of mattsportsmedia.com is to shine a light on the athletes that are making an impact in Wyoming Seminary athletics. Each week, I’ll be selecting — with the help of the school —one male and one female athlete who stood out, not just for their stats, but for their leadership, effort, and the way they represent Sem.

This week’s athletes of the week are…

Boys: Artur Zelenko (Soccer, Senior)

While he is very active off the field in volunteering efforts for his home country, Artur Zelenko is making just as big an impact on the Wyoming Seminary boys soccer team.

The Ukrainian senior arguably notched his best week of the season, finishing with five goals and one assist across two games.

Zelenko found the back of the net once and added an assist in Sem’s 5-0 win over Wyoming Area.

He followed up that performance with a explosive four goal game against the MMI Preppers — spearheading Sem’s 6-0 shutout win.

These consecutive wins powered the Blue Knights to an impressive 8-3 record overall.

“We played great last week,” Zelenko said. “I love the team effort and that everyone gave 100% effort.”

Zelenko has been one of the focal points for the Blue Knights all season long, using his quickness and finishing ability to stretch defenses and create scoring opportunities for himself and others.

His four-goal outing against the Preppers served as a reminder that he is one of the most dangerous scorers in the district when he finds his rhythm.

Zelenko’s ability to step up in big games for Sem will be tested as the Blue Knights push towards the end of the regular season.

After dropping games in dramatic fashion to Tunkhannock and Lake-Lehman, Sem will have two chances on the road to get revenge and prove that the district title is theirs to take.

Zelenko and the Blue Knights travel to take on the Tunkhannock Area Tigers on Wednesday, October 1st. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 PM.

With Zelenko in form and the team clicking, the Blue Knights enter this crucial stretch with confidence and momentum — and their senior star is ready to lead the way.

Girls: Emmy Swartz (Field Hockey, Senior)

It’s only fitting that Emmy Swartz earns this week’s honors after delivering one of the most clutch performances of the season for the Wyoming Seminary field hockey team.

With the Blue Knights searching for a way to bounce back after a 8-1 loss to Wyoming Area, Swartz stepped up when her team needed her most.

The senior captain powered her Blue Knights to an 8-0 rout of Delaware Valley on September 22, scoring twice.

After a tough 3-0 loss to Crestwood, Sem secured their fourth win of the season — with Swartz’s overtime goal sealing the 2-1 win.

The win against Wilkes-Barre Area might just be the turning point for Sem field hockey. Sitting at 3-6 after the Wyoming Area loss, Sem faced an uphill climb in the middle of their conference slate.

With Swartz leading the charge, the Blue Knights stablized themselves quickly, building momentum at a critical time.

“I think we are really coming together as a team and putting in max effort for every minute of the game,” Swartz said. “We were really hungry to beat Wilkes-Barre Area in overtime.”

As the calendar flips to October, this growing momentum will be tested immediately.

On Wednesday, October 1st, Sem hosts Wyoming Valley West in a pivotal conference matchup.

The game, which starts at 4:15 on Klassner Field, was slotted at No. 5 on the mattsportsmedia.com Top 5 Fall Matches.

The Ohio State commit currently sits atop the scoring and assist leaderboards for the Blue Knights. Through 10 games, Swartz has netted 7 goals with 5 assists.

Before heading off to OSU to play field hockey, Swartz remains focused on finishing her senior season strong and helping Sem remain in playoff contention every time she steps on the field.
