One of the main goals of mattsportsmedia.com is to shine a light on the athletes that are making an impact in Wyoming Seminary athletics. Each week, I’ll be selecting — with the help of the school —one male and one female athlete who stood out, not just for their stats, but for their leadership, effort, and the way they represent Sem.
This week’s athletes of the week are…
Boys: Nelson Martinez (Football, Junior)
When you complete 79.2% of your passes and lead the football team to a 13 point road victory, it’s hard not to give you the Athlete of the Week selection.
In his second career start for Wyoming Seminary, Martinez led the Blue Knights in a Week 2 away matchup against the Peddie School in Highstown, New Jersey.
Following an opening drive goal line stand by the Blue Knight defensive, Martinez orchestrated the offense on a long drive — resulting in a 2 yard TD pass to RB Zach Sebestyen.
“Scoring first showed all our hard work we put in through the past few weeks,” Martinez said. “It created momentum for us going forward for the rest of the game.”
Blue Knights quarterback Nelson Martinez executed a beautiful 2 minute drill at the end of the first half. With 1:23 to go in the half, Martinez connected with WR Martin Kasungu for a 40 yard gain, setting the Sem offense at Peddie’s 25 yard line.
The very next play, Martinez again delivered a ball to Kasungu — this time a 25 yd TD completion.
With under two minutes left in the game, the signal caller found his WR Mikey Allard for a 33 yard house call — securing the first win of the George Pachucy era.
Blue Knights quarterback Nelson Martinez completed 11 of his 14 pass attempts for 198 yards with 3 passing touchdowns.
The 27-0 loss in Week 1 to St. Thomas More was quickly put in the rearview mirror with Martinez’s performance on Saturday.
“Going into this game, we knew we needed to get a win under our belt,” Martinez explained. “We were hungry and ambitious to get it done and win.”
With nearly a month of learning Coach Pachucy’s fairly complex offense, Martinez seems to be adjusting ahead of schedule.
Martinez’s Blue Knights remain on the road this week when they matchup against William Penn Charter this Saturday, September 20, at 1 PM.
Girls: Addie Priebe (Tennis, Senior)
Game. Set. Match.
That’s been the theme for senior Addie Priebe this fall for Wyoming Seminary girls tennis. After playing doubles for the first two years of her Sem varsity career, Priebe moved up to singles last year and has taken over the top position now.
Through eight contests, the senior is yet to drop a first singles match, establishing herself as one of the region’s most consistent performers.
Priebe’s steady dominance on the court has offset the loss of 3x state singles champion Ilana Rosenthal ’25, keeping the Blue Knights strong at the top of the lineup.
Much of Priebe’s success can be traced to her year-round training with private coach Fred Hockenbury. That commitment has sharpened every part of her game — from a reliable first serve to long rally wins. Her ability to place her shots right on the boundary lines keeps her opponents on the defensive.
Priebe’s currnet unbeaten streak includes wins over several of the league’s top programs, almost all of them decided in straight sets.
The senior star describes her strong regular season play this year.
“This season I’ve been playing super consistent,” Priebe said. “It’s fun no matter win or lose, but it feels nice to have no losses thus far senior year.”
Her teammates say that it’s not just her play that stands out, but her leadership as well.
“Addie sets the standard for all of us,” Eshaal Ahmad ’26 said. “She pushes us in practice and is the loudest cheerer. She’s the true definition of an excellent teammate.”
Unfortunately, an injury sidelined two of last week’s matches — including Sem’s only loss of the season to Allentown Central Catholic.
Now that Priebe is healthy, her ability to provide a near-automatic point each match will be crucial to the Blue Knights success during postseason play.
Sem girls tennis travels to Dallas and Tunkhannock on Wednesday (September 17) and Thursday (September 18). Both matches are scheduled to start at 4 PM.
