One of the main goals of mattsportsmedia.com is to shine a light on the athletes that are making an impact in Wyoming Seminary athletics. Each week, I’ll be selecting — with the help of the school —one male and one female athlete who stood out, not just for their stats, but for their leadership, effort, and the way they represent Sem.
This week’s athletes of the week are…
Boys: Owen Stretanski (Soccer, Sr.)
It was only a matter of time before Owen Stretanski would find himself on this list.
Ever since he arrived at Sem as a freshman, Stretanski has played and started in big time games. He played an instrumental role in Sem’s district championship run last fall. Stretanski scored the go-ahead goal in the title game off a beautiful free kick assist from Jonathan Gerold.
For the majority of his career, though, the Blue Knights’ offense has been the Matt Swartz show featuring Owen Stretanski. What’s special about this season is that Stretanski holds the keys to the Blue Knights’ success.
“I just try to stay focused and make the right plays for the team,” Stretanski said. “I’m fortunate that I have such talented teammates that make the game so much easier for myself.”
The senior center midfielder took control of the Blue Knights’ offensive attack last week. Stretanski netted a brace in Sem’s commanding 5-0 win over the Wyoming Area Warriors.
He followed up his two goal performance with a hat trick in Sem’s shutout 7-0 win versus the MMI Preppers. While the offense has been clicking for him and his team, Stretanski was quick to credit the backlines.
“Even better than our offense is our defense who has nearly been perfect,” Stretanski said.
But Stretanski was causing problems on the field long before stepping onto Nesbitt Field this season. After an impressive season with Lehigh Valley United, Stretanski earned a selection to the Elite Clubs National League U17 All-Regional League in the North Atlantic division.
Stretanski aims to continue carving up defenses, putting Sem in a great position to strike the jackpot in back-to-back seasons. As long as number 9 is on the field, the Blue Knights should like their chances against anybody.
Girls: Ella Plummer (Field Hockey, Jr.)
Oftentimes, the majority of the attention and praise for the success of the field hockey team is directed towards the likes of Emmy Swartz and Sophia Medico. But this fall, junior Ella Plummer is making sure her name belongs in the same conversation.
In just four games, Plummer has already shown noticeable growth from her first two varsity seasons. After tallying a total of 5 career varsity goals as a freshman and a sophomore, she scored a critical hat trick in Sem’s 5-2 win over the Northwest Area Rangers — matching more than half of her total career varsity goals in one night.
Plummer’s performance didn’t just fill the stat sheet — it came when her team needed her the most. After junior Anna Rolland left Klassner Field in an ambulance, the Blue Knights were desperate for an offensive spark. Plummer answered the call, bringing energy and composure in a moment of adversity.
Tufts University commit Sophia Medico emphasized how Plummer’s effort changed throughout the course of the game.
“Ella really stepped up with Anna gone,” Medico said. “She got so much better in the Northwest Area game.”
Plummer’s emergence could be a game-changer for the Sem field hockey team moving forward. If she can keep this high level of play up, Plummer will not only help the Blue Knights win, but also uphold the program’s storied history of dominance.
The junior isn’t focused on her numbers, though. She remains focused on her top priority: helping the Blue Knights win alongside her teammates.
