Blue Knights Weekly: Week 2 Recap

With any first week jitters out of the way, Wyoming Seminary teams have settled into their rhythm during Week 2 of the fall season. From dominant individual performances to hard-fought battles, the Blue Knights displayed both their firepower and resilience through the early days of September.

Not able to attend many games this week? No worries.

Here’s everything you need to know from Week 2 of Sem sports.

Girls Tennis (6-0) — Wins over Hazleton Area, MMI Prep

The unbeaten season lives to see another week.

After two days of rest to start their week, the Sem girls tennis team squared off against Hazleton Area last Wednesday at home. The Blue Knights breezed past the Lady Cougars, winning 5-0.

On Friday, September 5th, the girls took their perfect record on the road against MMI Prep. Sem once again took all 5 games to advance to 6-0 on the year.

Number one singles player, senior Addie Priebe, is yet to lose a game for the Blue Knights. Priebe discussed her early impressions of the team this season.

“This year everyone has improved so much and the togetherness is definitely a huge factor behind our current undefeated season,” Priebe said.

Perhaps the Blue Knights first real test of the season will be this Thursday when they host Allentown Central Catholic — a District 11 contender — at the Lull Center. This match is scheduled to start at 4:15.

Boys Soccer (6-0) Wins against Wyoming Area, MMI Prep

Forget the win/loss record for a moment. Let’s talk about the scoring differential for the Blue Knights: 26-0 through 6 games. Numbers don’t lie.

The Sem boys soccer team opened up conference play this past Tuesday when they took on the Wyoming Area Warriors. With goals from Artur Zelenko (2), Owen Stretanski (2), and LD Jolin, the Blue Knights easily defeated the Warriors — winning 5-0 at home.

Sem ended their week with a trip up to MMI to matchup against the Preppers in a district quarterfinal rematch from last year. Stretanski netted his first hat trick of the season, helping the Blue Knights secure a 7-0 shutout victory over MMI.

“We have a bunch of guys who can put the ball in the back of the net,” Stretanski said. “Even better is our defense yet to let up a goal.”

Jolin put one more home while Rorry Maxwell and Adam Salam opened their scoring columns with one goal each.

New addition to the starting lineup Ivan Penji looks to bolster an already dominant team in the coming weeks. With the defense looking stronger than ever and the offense improving every game, the stars seem to be aligning for another title run.

The Blue Knights prepare for a PIAA District 2 Class A championship rematch against the Holy Redeemer Royals. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:15 at the Forty-Fort Recreational Complex.

Field Hockey (2-2) Won against Northwest Area; Lost to Easton Area

When Anna Rolland left in an ambulance midway through the Northwest Area game, the Blue Knights were left with two choices: let the setback define them or prove their resilience. For Sophia Medico, the choice was obvious.

“We had to control the controllables and focus on winning the game for Anna because that was all we could do for our teammate in the moment,” Medico said.

The Blue Knights did exactly that, rallying for a 5-2 win over the Lady Rangers. Ella Plummer tallied three goals in the victory while Apollonia Bruno and Emmy Swartz added one each.

The girls kicked off their weekend with an early, rainy 10 AM match against Easton Area. Sem lacked a high percentage of possesion for much of the game, and eventually conceded the game 6-0 to the Rovers.

Sem field hockey returns to action this Monday, September 8th, on the road against Lackawanna Trail.

Football (0-1) — Lost to St. Thomas More School

Just like the first game of the NFL season, the Blue Knights’ Week 1 game was halted by lightning. Unlike the pros, though, Sem’s game never resumed — and maybe that was for the best.

When the game was called off just three plays into the third quarter, the Blue Knights trailed St. Thomas More 27-0 in the third quarter. While this scoreline certainly seems troubling, the Blue Knight fateful shouldn’t press the panic button just yet.

For starters, the Chancellors are most likely the best prep football school Sem will play this season. Secondly, this is the first game under essentially a completely new coaching room.

All things considered, the boys put up a respectable effort — stringing together some drives with multiple first downs. On the other side of the ball, the defense came out ready to start the second half.

The longest tenured player on the Blue Knights, senior offensive lineman Aaron Kutney remains optimistic about the future.

“We had a couple mistakes but we looked like a team that’ll win games this year,” Kutney said.

Sem football continues their month long roadtrip next week against the Peddie School. With the Blue Knights searching for win number one, kickoff is scheduled for 2 PM.

Cross Country (Girls 3-0, Boys 2-1): Hosted Meet Number One

With senior runner Grace Rushmer leading the pack, the Blue Knights have gotten off to a sizzling start to the season.

The Sem cross country team opened their regular season on September 3rd by hosting a Cluster 2 race against Holy Redeemer, Hanover Area, and Berwick Area.

Rushmer followed up her commendable 11th place finish at the 50th Annual Cliff Robbins Invitational by placing 1st in this meet. She won the meet by a comfortable 9 seconds, finishing in 21:46. Rushmer’s time helped secure the girls team a 3-0 start to the season.

Fellow team captain Maya Gross finished 6th place at 23:52 while freshman Celia Ludka trailed right behind her for 7th place with a time of 23:56.

For the boys, Brayden Kilduff put together a strong race — placing 6th in the boys meet, running a 19:06. A similar storyline for the boys meet as Dylan Chen took 7th with his time of 19:37. Only dropping the meet to Holy Redeemer, the boys currently hold a 2-1 record.

The Blue Knights will be well rested before their next meet, as they are on by this week. The team continues their season on Wednesday, September 17th, against Pittston Area, Wyoming Area, Wyoming Valley West, and WB Area.

Girls Soccer (3-3) — Won against Elk Lake; Lost to Lake-Lehman

Heading into last week, the Blue Knights were left searching for answers following a brutal 10-0 loss to Mid Valley. Unfortunately for Sem, the situation got worse before it improved.

With Emma Butcher still sidelined with a back injury, an already tough home matchup against the reining conference champions Lake-Lehman got even harder. The Blue Knights were no match for the Black Knights who comfortably won the game 10-1. Sem’s lone goal came late in the second half — an Ellie Kersey score off a corner kick delivery from Ella Stambaugh.

As the Elk Lake Lady Warriors arrived at Nesbitt Stadium this past Saturday, Sem girls soccer desperately needed a win to get back on track. Stambaugh proved why she deserved the inaugural mattsportsmedia.com Athlete of the Week with her inspiring 4 goal performance against the Warriors.

With those goals, Stambaugh upped her career total to 51 varsity goals — an impressive milestone for any junior to hit.

“Scoring 50 goals was a great milestone to achieve, but I’m most thankful that I was able to help the team secure the win,” Stambaugh said.

Besides Stambaugh’s career afternoon, freshman Stella Guesto added some fireworks of her own. Guesto recorded her first career varsity goal in Sem’s 5-1 win against the Lady Warriors.

The Blue Knights aim to cross the .500 mark this week with a home match against Wyoming Area (September 9th, 6:00 PM) and a road contest against Holy Redeemer (September 12th, 4:45 PM).

Golf (5-6) — Won against Wilkes-Barre Area; Lost to Pittston Area

After starting their season 4-5, the Blue Knights took one step backwards before getting back to one game behind .500.

The Sem golf team found themselves in a tough match against a strong opponent, Pittston Area, last Tuesday at the Huntsville Golf Club. Despite strong individual performances from Will May (43) and Caleb Aponick (44), the Blue Knights ultimately conceded the home match to the Patriots.

A few days later on Friday, September 5th, the Blue Knights hosted the Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack. This time around, Sem protected their home course — scoring a 168 in their win. Ayden Wilkinson and Michelle Wu led the scoring for Sem with their 41s. Aponick added a 43 to secure the victory for the Blue Knights.

Aponick commended the collective effort from his teammates in the win.

“Everyone played well,” Aponick said. “We did the simple things right and hit and made shots that mattered.”

This is a big week forthcoming for the Sem golf team. Coach LesBlond will lead his team against Holy Redeemer this Tuesday, September 9th. Tee time is set for 3:00 PM.

After returning home for a 3:30 PM match versus Wyoming Valley West on September 10th, the Blue Knights are back on the road for a Friday afternoon showdown with the Crestwood Comets.
