Wyoming Seminary soccer opened the 182nd school year in style, with both the boys and girls teams securing wins against Mountain View and Lakeland, respectively.
First up tonight was Sem boys soccer who put forth an impressive 4-0 win against the Mountain View Eagles at Nesbitt Memorial Stadium. If you watched the Blue Knights in action last season, you would recall that executing corner kicks was not their speciality.
New junior Canadian forward Louis-David Jolin wasted no time in changing that narrative, scoring off a corner ball from senior Artur Zelenko in the 11th minute. Scoring the first goal of the season for Sem, Jolin put just enough on the ball to get it past goalkeeper Nick Beach of the Eagles.
The first half of play ended with the lone goal from Jolin, and Sem took a 1-0 lead into intermission. Having battled in an iconic 4-3 district semifinal win last season, the Blue Knights knew that they would need another punch or two to knock off the Eagles.
Even though he arrived back to campus just this past weekend, Zelenko made his presence felt in the second half for the Blue Knights. During the 58th minute, he tucked the ball into the bottom right corner of the net following a great feed from sophomore Adrian Hinchman. Zelenko wasn’t done upping the scoreline, though. Just ten minutes later, he spun off a defender and buried another shot — this time in the middle left corner — with an assist from senior captain Ash Kornfeld.
If the Eagles thought that the damage was finished, they were wrong. In his first career start, junior Benen Griffin put one past Beach — with just 27 seconds left in the game — after sophomore Kellan Krypel threaded the needle with a beautiful through ball.
If history is any guide, the Blue Knights will be happy to see another familiar 4-0 start to their season. Last year, Sem played their first game on the road against Mountain View. The result? 4-0. These Blue Knights still have a long way to go and still are adjusting to life without Matt Swartz, Sam Rolland, and Jonathan Gerold. However, as today’s scoreline suggests, Sem should like their chances against anybody moving forward.
The boys team is back in action on the road this Wednesday against Wyoming Valley West with kickoff set for 6:30 P.M.

The Blue Knights’ success on Monday night didn’t stop with the boys. In a wild back-and-forth contest, Sem girls soccer edged out the Lakeland Chiefs, winning 7-5.
The Chiefs got out to an early lead, but the Blue Knights tied the game at 1-1 shortly thereafter. The two squads put in one goal each before the halftime whistle sounded — 2-2 at the break.
The seesaw ride continued in the second half with both teams exchanging goals until the scoreline was 5-5. The dynamic duo of Ellie Kersey and Ella Stambaugh put the Chiefs to bed, upping the scoreline to 7-5, good enough for the win.
Even the offseason couldn’t cool down junior center midfielder Ellie Kersey as she continued her dominant play, scoring a hat trick in the win. Kersey’s running mate, junior forward Ella Stambaugh, notched a brace and provided the final blow — scoring the seventh goal for the Blue Knights. Fellow junior Olivia Deluca added two goals in the win as well.
With the win, Sem girls soccer improves to 2-0 on the season under new head coach Christopher Gardner. The Blue Knights have little time to rest as they take on Scranton Prep at home this evening. They’ll look to continue their winning streak with kickoff set for 5:30 P.M. at Nesbitt Memorial Stadium.
